Dan Langille is the founder of PGCON and has been using PostgreSQL since 2000. He didn't follow SQL much when he took it during a university course. In the early 1990s he started using SQL professionally and soon found he greatly enjoyed designing databases and designing SQL queries.
To this day, one of his greatest pastimes is the FreshPorts website, which combines both FreeBSD and PostgreSQL.
