PostgreSQL and Disaster Management

PostgreSQL has been used for the multi-hazard vulnerability and risk assessment, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). A huge data with spatial information from the 20 districts of the Punjab-Pakistan is collected and stored in the database.

PostgreSQL has been found stable, secure and reliable with zero licensing cost.

In this presentation/lecture, a concept will be delivered about how to get benefit from PostgreSQL & PostGIS to deal/manage the huge data along with spatial details related to the disaster management activities along with the lessons learned during the execution of the project.

Under the initiative of the Govt of Punjab for strengthening the disaster prevention, resilience, and management strategies. In this regard, a detailed survey of the flood-prone areas in Punjab was conducted and necessary data that is needed for the disaster management is collected and stored in the PostgreSQL.

Initially, a transactional database was created to dump the data. In parallel, the data from the transactional database was shifted to an analytical database through ETL. This data is then used for different disaster management tools and for generation of the risk and hazard maps to facilitate the disaster management teams in the districts. During this project, the PostgreSQL supported very well to store the 2TB of data securely. Further, the spatial support in the form of PostGIS was very useful, helpful in the mapping of data in different disaster management tools.
