SUMMARY:Developing New Zealand's Electoral Roll on PostgreSQL - Succes
s Story: running New Zealand's Electoral Roll on PostgreSQL
DESCRIPTION: The New Zealand Electoral Roll was migrated from Oracle t
 o PostgreSQL in 2002 by Catalyst IT.This deployment coincided with a t
otal rewrite of the system. In this talk I will discuss how and why Po
stgreSQL was selected\, how we have used PostgreSQL to support continu
ous development and where we would like to go in the near future.

SUMMARY:Digesting an open-source fair-use TPC-E implementation. - TPC-
E is the new On-Line Transaction Processing workload being developed b
y the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC). It is intended
  to replace the aging TPC-C.
DESCRIPTION: This talk starts by describing the TPC-E specification in
high-level terms and reasoning why TPC-E represents modern database s
erver workload. It continues by explaining the benefits to the open so
urce development community (particularly to the PostgreSQL community)
of counting on an open-source workload based on the industry-standard
TPC-E benchmark. The implementation and architecture of the workload a
re outlined and motivating experimental results are presented.

SUMMARY:Execution plan optimization techniques - Execution plan optimi
zation techniques and possible improvements in PostgreSQL implementati
 on
DESCRIPTION: We will shortly describe and explain the problem of cost
based execution plan optimization. We will focus primarily on algorith
ms for searching the space of all possible alternatives for the large
number of joins. We will briefly describe these algorithms and their p
ossible variants\, compare them together and we will try to pick up so
me of them as suitable for solving our problem. Some examples of execu
tion of these algorithms on the traveling salesman problem will be sho
wn. The traveling salesman problem was chosen for the presentation bec
ause it is a very similar problem and much easier to imagine and prese
nt than searching the space of execution plan alternatives.

SUMMARY:Stream Processing with PostgreSQL - An Introduction to Data St
 reams and TelegraphCQ
DESCRIPTION: An introduction to data stream query processing. Traditio
nal database systems use a "store and query" model: the data is stored
by the DBMS\, and one-time queries are submitted\, evaluated\, and th
en the results returned to clients. This model is often inappropriate
for a world in which data is constantly in motion. For applications li
ke network monitoring\, real-time financial analysis\, and sensor netw
orks\, the overhead required to store data to disk and then compute a
one-time query is excessive. A data stream management system (DSMS) al
